L’île de Rishiri 利尻島 est située au large de l’île septentrionale sauvage d’Hokkaido, au nord du Japon. Elle fait partie, avec sa voisine Rebun, du parc national de Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu pour la richesse de sa nature.

Rishiri a une population d’un peu plus de 5 000 habitants et ses ressources principales sont le tourisme et les produits marins tels que les oursins et les algues kombu. Les amoureux de nature sauvage et d’aventure viennent tenter l’ascension du mont Rishiri chaque année.

Le nom de Rishiri provient de la langue autochtone Ainu qui signifie “île des hauts sommets”. Surnom amplement mérité au vu de l’altitude du Mont Rishiri, ancien volcan éteint formé par une éruption il y a 200 000 ans.

Il est parfois surnommé Rishiri Fuji en raison de sa forme similaire au Mont Fuji. Du sommet, la vue à 360° nous laisse apercevoir l’île russe de Sakhaline, Rebun et l’île principale d’Hokkaido.

L’économie florissante du hareng
D’une superficie de 180 km2, l’île de Rishiri est la deuxième plus grande île japonaise après Sado.
À la fin du shogunat Tokugawa, l’île est de plus en plus en contact avec des étrangers, notamment des pêcheurs et baleiniers. Elle subit des attaques de la Russie toute proche en 1807.

Le hareng est la denrée au cœur de l’économie de l’île. En 1915, l’île alors en plein essor a une pêche annuelle de plus de 100 000 tonnes. Malheureusement, après 1955 les harengs se font de plus en plus rares et l’île se reconvertit dans la pêche au varech, à l’oursin, au poulpe et au flet.

Une nature sauvage précieuse et protégée
Désignée comme parc national de Rishiri Rebun en 1965 et comme parc national de Sarobetsu en 1974, l’île est maintenant devenue une destination touristique pour les amateurs de nature.

L’île a mis récemment en place un parcours touristique le “Mont Rishiri 16 Scenic Spots” avec des tampons originaux à collecter aux différents endroits. Le but est d’inciter les visiteurs à découvrir la montagne sous ses différentes facettes, que les locaux surnomment “les 16 beaux visages”.
